Skills enhancement and the ZCAP program

The corporate value of Skill reads as follows. To do it right the first time, using our vast collective knowledge and experience.

That knowledge comes from decades of successfully completed projects, but also from internal initiatives such as the Zachry Craft Advancement Program — ZCAP.

ZCAP was developed by Zachry craft experts. It evaluates existing skills for each participant, sets a baseline, and creates a path to journeyman status. In this way it helps address Zachry’s future workforce needs by complementing external training and certification programs.

The need is great, because baby boomers are reaching retirement, taking their abilities and experience with them. Zachry wants to replace as much of this skill and knowledge as possible.

The program has different levels, so that participants can see how they are progressing. When they demonstrate an ability or skill at a particular level the instructor notes it in their qualification book. This information also goes to Zachry’s training database, allowing management to track someone’s progress regardless of location.

The program is extremely flexible. It combines classroom learning with on-the-job training. It also allows for the fact that different people have different goals. For example, some workers want to be at the elite level for their craft, but have no interest in taking on more responsibility. Others want to move up to the foreman and supervisor levels, and some have higher levels of management in their long-term sights.

In this way, ZCAP helps chart the most productive and tailor-made approach for each participant.
